Connecting students to their world by making them curators of primary sources they select themselves.

Grades 6-8

In these videos, students work directly with objects from Africa to try to determine what the objects are, where they are from, and the purpose they serve.

Reviewing What Students Already Know

In this video, I review with students what they already know about the African cultures whose primary source materials we will work with.

Observations and Speculations

In this video, students make their first contact with the African artifacts. They make sketches and observations and speculate about the object’s purpose.

The Final Reveal

In this video, I ask students to present their observations and best guesses about the object’s purpose to the rest of the class. Then I reveal the actual function of each object.
