Helping students understand what they need from a text to be successful in writing.

Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12

In this series of videos, I invite participants to consider going beyond the lesson plan to the learning plan. This is a more complex and holistic approach to developing the sets of skills that students need to be successful writers and meet the Common Core State Standards.

Part One: Introduction

In part one of the workshop, I demonstrate how to take a traditional lesson plan and evolve it into a learning plan.

Part Two: Test Drive

In part two of the workshop, we explore the use of a “test drive” – an exemplary piece of writing that models what the teacher is looking for from students. Then we discuss the underpinning skills a child would need to produce work of this quality.

Part Three: What is the Value of a Learning Plan?

In part three of the workshop, we discuss in detail and as a group the value of this approach to the teacher and to the student.
