Increasing equity and encouraging student voice with Socratic thinking.

by Jody Zepp

Grades 9-12

In this series of videos, I deploy the Socratic method to push students to deeply examine the topic of drugs and alcohol. My role is to facilitate the discussion with open ended questions that encourage students to speak frankly and expansively about a challenging topic.

Building Knowledge

In this video, students have watched a video about substance abuse and are using what they’ve learned about the characters to categorize different drugs and the affects they typically have on people.

Hermeneutic Analysis

In this video, students read and interpret quotes about addiction as a way to develop the capacity to do hermeneutic analysis.

Expanding Consciousness

In this video, I use the Socratic approach to expand the conversation about addiction, even taking it beyond drugs and alcohol.
