Making students better writers and independent learners by helping students to discover the crafts and structures within mentor texts that accomplished authors use.

In this series of videos, I invite participants to look closely at a text, identify elements that resonate with them and explain why, then use what they’ve learned to craft their own personal stories.

Part One: Introduction

In part one of the workshop, I introduce my approach to inspiring students to look closely at text. I start by reading from a book then asking participants what they thought it was about.

Part Two: The Writing Craft

In part two of the workshop, I ask participants to look closely at the text of the book and underline a phrase or words that resonate with them. Then we analyze the phrases and discuss the connection between how the writer crafted them and our responses.

Part Three: Imitation with Purpose

In part three of the workshop, I ask participants to use some of the writing techniques that they identified in our book and use them in a short personal story.
