Strengthening student reading with engaging group read-alouds.

by Gay Barnes

Grades K-2, Grades 3-5

In these videos, I read aloud a set of fiction and informational texts with a very specific intention to lead students to examine vocabulary, book structure, word types, and content.

Compound and Sight Words

In this video, I read a fiction text to demonstrate the way the author creatively uses compound words. I read a second text to enable the students to practice their “sight” words or words they are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight.

In Other Words

In this video, I use the book “Tess’s Tip Tapping Toes” to introduce to students the idea of alternative or more expressive word choices.

Informational Texts

In this video, we read an informational text and spend a lot of time examining the structure, parts and devices the author uses to convey and define content and subject matter.
